Setting Direction of Weight Rollers

Which direction should we install the weight roller? In most weight rollers, you see an open side and a stopping side. Are these two sides doing anything with the way you put the weight rollers?

The answer is YES. By Newton’s first law of motion, both weight rollers and variator have an inertia, weight rollers have a tendency to stay rest at the moment the variator starts to rotate, and therefore it’s important to set the weight rollers in the correct direction.

In the case of putting the weight rollers in wrong direction, problems below may happen:

  1. Wear damage
    • The metal insert (either copper or iron) of the weight roller can be slightly loosen from the collar (i.e., the outer plastic part) while remaining in the ramp. Though slowly, this will damage the variator.
  2. Strange sounds
    • Due to the problem above, the metal insert will continue wearing out the wall of the ramp, which will then produce more and more strange sounds.
  3. Loudly strange sounds and bad performance
    • In rare cases, the metal insert might completely fall off from the collar. Since the metal doesn’t remain in the ramp, it becomes direct damage to the variator and ramp plate, resulting in strange sounds and bad performance.

Therefore, it’s crucial to put weight rollers in the correct direction. If you are unsure about the correct orientation, please go for a tuning shop or a professional technician.

Basic Concept

Either to DIY or go for a scooter shop, you can find some useful information of weight rollers installation direction below.

First, we need to identify where the transmission system is located, left- or right-side of the vehicle. The way you put weight rollers can be opposite in these two types of vehicles. Once you know whether the transmission system is on the left or right side of the vehicle, you may follow the corresponding figures below, and correctly put the weight rollers.

Installation Keys

1. Follow the installation figure below. – EASY —

Put stopping sides in the anti-clockwise orientation.

2. Follow the installation figure below. – EASY — For Sliding Roller Weight ONLY.

It’s very simple to identify the installation direction for a Sliding Roller Weight. As you can see the Dr.Pulley logo on the stopping side, just keep the Sliding Roller Weight upright (i.e., Dr.Pulley logo upright) and put it in. That’s it.

Decided by the Direction of Rotation of Variator

This method can be a little more complicated for some people, but once you know the knowledge behind it, you can quickly decide the installation direction of weight rollers. This method applies to almost all CVT vehicles.

Key: To know the direction of rotation of the variator.

Once you know the direction of the rotation of the variator, you put the large OPEN SIDE of the roller weight in the SAME direction as the direction of rotation of the variator.

Setting Direction of Weight Rollers - the Direction of Weight Rollers

Each weight roller has a direction when it is assembled (So we have STOPPING SIDE and OPEN SIDE). If the weight roller is installed in the wrong direction, the inner weight part (usually metal insert) may come out. So, pay attention when installing them into your variator.

The Stopping Side of weight roller faces the OPPOSITE of the direction of the rotation of the Variator.
